Gaisford was educated at Durham University, ordained in 1961〔Crockford's Clerical Directory2008/2009 Lambeth, Church House Publishing ISBN 978-0-7151-1030-0〕 and began his ordained ministry with a curacy at St Hilda's Audenshaw.〔(Church website )〕 from 1960 to 1962.
